Vegan chocolate-filled hamantaschen,
There is such a bite and it’s waiting for you right here below.
Chocolate hamantaschen are my favorite bite.
And this year I have for you a recipe so legendary that you won’t stop eating it.
This is a quick recipe that the filling is an integral part of,
We start by making the filling and move on to making our wonderful and devoted dough.
It’s a genius dough that’ll give us vegan and intoxicating chocolate-filled hamantaschen.
Last year we celebrated Purim in a state of shock due to our relocation.
We were in Italy right at the beginning of our journey there,
And it was our first holiday away from home and family.
I decided to bring the holiday into our home,
And I organized a Purim family party for us.
It sounds easy, but in reality it’s just the journey of finding the ingredients I need to make the hamantaschen.
It took me two days, because I was still struggling with my Italian and all the ingredients were written in Italian and almost no one spoke English.
After I managed to get everything I needed, I came home excited and started making my hamantaschen.
At every step of the recipe I got more and more excited,
I felt my mother looking at me with her sparkling eyes even though she was far away and in Israel,
I felt the happy and full laughter of my father surrounding the dressed up and happy children,
I felt the joy of my brothers around the event.
As I was folding the last hamantaschen I felt myself,
Essy the girl who can’t fall asleep from excitement the night before Purim.
That girl who woke up very early on the morning of Purim with a lot of butterflies in her tummy,
I remembered the indulgent Purim baskets I used to prepare and was proud of,
I remembered the excitement surrounding wearing the costume,
As soon as we were all at home we collected our excitement into pictures that will accompany us for years.
As soon as I put the hamantaschen in the oven I realized,
That we will forever feel at home wherever my heart beats and my loved ones are by my side.
It just depends on me and the feeling you will have in our house.
And so with great excitement,
We designed the living room of our house,
On a completely ordinary Saturday for the Italians,
Purim songs played in the background,
We all dressed up
We danced, we sang, we celebrated our holiday,
Our family,
Our Purim everywhere in the world.
We told the children stories about the Purim holidays we had when we were children,
We hugged, we loved, we ate the hamantaschen, we laughed a lot,
And in my heart I knew that everything I wanted was by my side,
May the sweet memories that surround me from the past always remain in my heart,
Now we are left to create new memories of life in our here and now.
The hamantaschen that I made at that Purim celebration accompanied us all year,
In moments of sweet longing for a grandparent’s hug,
We would go into the kitchen together, the kids and I, and we would make this sweet bite,
Which took on a huge meaning and in a way gave us a sense of home.
This recipe has a huge place in my heart.
Its light and his story are here to celebrate with all of us this happy holiday,
Anywhere in the world and at any given moment in our lives.
It came to gladden the heart,
Unite the family,
Stop for a moment with a bite at the end of the hamantaschen in our mouth and say thank you,
Thank you for the happy heart,
Thank you for the endless togetherness,
Thank you for the opportunity to celebrate,
Thanks for the abundance,
Thank you for this moment no matter what storm is brewing outside,
No matter how much longing or worries are in your hearts,
Just for a short and wonderful moment we will stop everything,
We will celebrate this bite and the here and now,
And give thanks for all the good we have and the good that’s yet to come.

The recipe that crossed borders,
The recipe that came a long way,
The recipe that gave me a feeling of home,
This is the recipe for celebrating the most colorful and happy holiday with everyone anywhere in the world.
30 minutes of pure pleasure,
Fun and healing preparation,
That unites thoughts into one joy,
And gives an unforgettable bite.

Vegan chocolate-filled hamantaschen
Ingredients
Suitable for 15-20 medium hamantaschen. For the filling:
- ½ cup peanut butter / almond butter
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- A tiny pinch of salt
For the dough:
- ½ cup almond butter (for alternatives, have a look at “A little extra from me”)
- ⅓ cup maple syrup (for alternatives, have a look at “A little extra from me”)
- 1¼ oat flour (for alternatives, have a look at “A little extra from me”)
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of salt
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) on turbo mode and line a baking pan with parchment paper.
נתחיל בהכנת המלית:
In a bowl put all the ingredients, the peanut butter, maple syrup, salt and cocoa and mix well to get a uniform filling. While waiting for the dough, the filling will set a little and it’ll be easier to work with.

Put the almond spread, maple syrup and salt in the bowl and mix well.
Add the oat flour and baking powder to the bowl and mix to a sticky mixture. I recommend mixing at first with a spoon and as soon as we have large, sticky dough crumbs, move to work with your hands until you get a ball of dough. If the mixture is too sticky and moist, add 2-3 tablespoons of flour and mix until you get a dough that’s comfortable to work with. Try not to add the flour immediately, give the dough mixture a moment to stabilize, the oats will swell a little inside the dough and stabilize it.
Roll out the ball of dough between two sheets of parchment paper to a thickness of 1-1½ centimeters. Try to roll out all the dough to the same thickness so that the hamantaschen don’t burn.
Remove the top parchment paper sheet and cut out 3.1” (8cm) diameter circles from the dough.
Carefully lift the circles of dough from the parchment paper and start designing the Hamantaschen.
Place ½ teaspoon of stuffing in the center of each circle, be careful not to put a lot of stuffing in each hamantaschen.
I like to make tiny filling circles that you can place in the center of each circle of dough and work easily.
Start by shrinking and creating one corner in the dough, move on to the second corner and finally fold the third corner. After shrinking the three corners, make sure that all the corners are tight and connected to each other so that the shape of the hamantaschen is preserved (I recommend taking a look at the pictures below).
Arrange the hamantaschen in the baking pan and put in the oven to bake for 12-15 minutes. After 10 minutes, check the hamantaschen, they should look dry and slightly tanned, if they don’t look like that, give them more baking time.
Take it out of the oven with great excitement, let it cool a little and dust it with joyous powdered sugar, bring it to the table with joy and lust and celebrate 🙂
A little extra from me:
- The hamantaschen can be kept on the counter in a sealed box / jar for up to 5 days.
- If the dough turns out too wet, add another 2-3 tablespoons of flour, if the dough is too dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of non-dairy / dairy milk or almond butter.
- Note that the best version is the version of the recipe as written above – any change in the ingredients will give a slightly different dough and change the texture of the dough that’s convenient to work with.
- You can replace the maple syrup with agave syrup.
- You can replace the almond butter with a hazelnut butter / cashew butter. The flavor of the butter you choose will affect the flavor of the cookies. The use of almond butter will give the best result.
- You can replace the oat flour with up to 1½ of almond flour. Add the almond flour gradually until you get a dough that’s comfortable to work with.

- You can put any filling you want such as date filling, chocolate, jam or poppy seeds.
